The GENERA Project has been featured in the Sardinian newspaper, following the workshop that took place in Rhodes, which focused on the challenges and opportunities for energy transition in touristic islands.
Our partner, Comune di Stintino, has shown on multiple occasions its strong commitment to the promotion of a just hashtag#energytransition in their territory. We are very grateful for their cooperation and endless support. Together, we can keep on working to achieve clean energy objectives.
The workshop held on September 26th in Rhodes, Greece, has also been featured in the local Rhodes newspaper! This event brought together key stakeholders to discuss the energy transition in tourist islands, a vital step towards creating more sustainable communities.

Highlights from the Workshop on “Energy Transition in Touristic Destinations: “The Challenges in European Islands” held on September 26th in Rhodes, Greece 🇬🇷
1️⃣ Opening Remarks: Petros Markopoulos, Head of the Clean Energy and Sustainable Transport Department of DAFNI Network, kicked off the day with a compelling presentation on “The Clean Energy Transition of the Greek Islands: Challenges and Good Practices.”
2️⃣ Educational Focus: Prof. Nelly Leligou from University of West Attica emphasized the importance of “Educating All Actors on the Challenge of the Energy Transition,” highlighting the need for comprehensive training and awareness.
3️⃣ Local Challenges: Adrián Fernández Vázquez, an Industrial Engineer from the Tenerife Energy Transition Office, shared insights into the unique challenges faced by Tenerife in its journey towards sustainable energy.
4️⃣ Engineering Perspectives: Mary Papandreou, Civil Engineer and MSc Director of the HIT Branch of the South Aegean Region, presented on “Energy Transition in Touristic Destinations,” addressing both opportunities and obstacles in the context of tourism.
5️⃣ Project Overview: Prof. Elisa Peñalvo-López, representing Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), introduced the GENERA project to all attendees and outlined the key challenges it aims to tackle in promoting energy transition across European islands.

We are excited to share that as part of the Genera project, we had the opportunity to visit the Councilor of Sant Josep de sa Talaia as well as the Councilor for the Environment and the Technical Department of the Council. It was a productive meeting where we discussed our initiatives and future collaborations.
This year’s challenge was “Tomorrow’s collective, sustainable spaces”. Students were encouraged to focus on a building (school, gym etc) of their town and find innovative ways to improve its hashtag#energyefficiency and hashtag#sustainability.
